From Universal Edit Button

The way "editing" works is that the site provides a URL which is used when the user presses the edit button. Some of the discussions here gravitate towards the idea that editing should be a standard (native) option offered by the browser. These two goals are create a tension that should be discussed.

The buttons the browser offers (or the actions in the file menu) are implemented in the browser, and though sometimes it is possible for sites to "play" with them, they are generally safe. However, if the browser offers a button that seems to be a feature of the browser but takes the user to an arbitrary location that can specified by each and every site, may lead to safety issues. So it seems that it is better that the button remain where it is, and not be too well integrated. The middle road between having it on each site and having it "in" the browser may be the best option.
