[edit] ¿Qué es?

El botón de edición universal es un icono verde en la barra del navegador que indica que una página es editable. Funciona de manera similar al icono naranja de RSS que indica que el contenido es sindicable a través de un lector de RSS.

Para ver el botón de edición universal en tu navegador, debes instalar esta extensión de Firefox, (notas de instalación, en inglés). Con el tiempo esperamos que los navegadores de Internet incluyan directamente el botón de edición universal, tal y como han hecho con los feeds.

[edit] Por qué es importante un botón de edición universal

El botón de edición universal (BEU) permite que alguien que esté navegando por Internet reconozca rápidamente cuándo una página web puede ser editada. Eso supone una comodidad para los usuarios de Internet que ya están habituados a hacer contribuciones en páginas wiki, y una invitación para aquéllos que aún tienen que descubrir la emoción de construir recursos de información comunes. Como este tipo de público editor es cada vez más amplio, el botón puede considerarse también como una especie de credencial de honor. Ello puede servir como incentivo para animar a empresas con presencia en Internet y a desarrolladores a añadir componentes públicamente editables en sus sitios, y así contar con el BEU en sus páginas.

De este modo, esperamos que el botón pueda servir de catalizador para el avance hacia una web editable, y ayude sí a consolidar la tendencia actual de la sociedad a construir recursos de información comunes.

[edit] Antecedentes

La visión inicial de Tim Berners-Lee de Internet era la de un medio que sirviera a la vez para leer y escribir. Pero la red fue madurando sin que muchos sitios web permitiesen que el usuario escribiera o editara directamente la información. En ese sentido, Internet evolucionó principalmente como un medio de "sólo lectura". Todo el mundo podía navegar a través de sus páginas, pero pocos podían disfrutar del privilegio de editarlas directamente.

Durante los últimos años, los participantes de páginas wiki y más gente afín a la idea de editar abiertamente contenidos están ayudando a difundir la idea de que Internet debería ser algo editable por cualquiera y en cualquier momento. El éxito de Wikipedia, y la utilidad creciente de wikis como wikiHow, AboutUs, wikiTravel o Wikia demuestran que que la edición abierta de contenidos puede crear recursos de información de alta calidad. Las páginas web tradicionales de "sólo lectura" tienden cada vez más a añadir la posibilidad de que cualquiera participe en ellas. Los wikis se encuentran ya entre los productos de software para empresas y las ofertas de servicios de gigantes de la red como Google. Internet se está haciendo más editable cada día que pasa, y sus usuarios se están volviendo más aficionados y creativos utilizando los instrumentos que permiten que la información sea compartida de una manera redicalmente integral.

[edit] Historia del botón de edición universal

Las conversaciones en torno a esta idea comenzaron en el RoCoCo (dentro del encuentro RecentChangesCamp) que tuvo lugar en Montreal en 2007, y posteriormente continuaron en el wiki de AboutUs. En el RCC de Palo Alto de 2008, un grupo de gente estuvo explorando la idea, se animaron auto-descubriendo cosas y finalmente contribuyeron a difundir el concepto.

Fueron muchas las ideas sugeridas por los editores para el icono del Botón de Edición Universal, tal y como se puede apreciar en el logo de este wiki. El icono actual fue seleccionado tras las sugerencias de Ward Cunningham al principio de las conversaciones. A medida que avance la adopción e implementación del BEU, la comunidad de editores de Internet podría decidir modificar dicho icono. Mientras tanto, nuestro objetivo es promover un botón que funciona entre diferentes plataformas (empezando por los wikis), que sirve independientemente del idioma en que se esté navegando, y que es sencillo y evocativo de lo que significa poder editar contenidos.
